The Film Foundation has a downloadable movie making guide targeted to teens titled, Making Movies: A Guide for Young Filmmakers. It offers film watching suggestions and a number exercises.

Created with the assistance and expertise of 25 professional film artists and educators, the manual is a detailed text that takes you step-by-step through the filmmaking process…from story concept to completed film.

The chapter on editing describes tape-to-tape editing, but the rest of the manual remains relevant.

IMDB Policy Change

IMDB.com, The Internet Movie Database, is an important resume link for people breaking into the film industry. IMDB used to have a policy that only films shown in select film festivals or distributed through a studio or network could be listed. They have just changed their policy in a way that will benefit new filmmakers.

Moby Film Music - Free

The musician Moby is offering film music for "independent and non-profit filmmakers, film students, and anyone in need of free music for their independent, non-profit film, video, or short." You need to register to hear the music at mobygratis.com. You must request a license to use the music.

Moby makes techno, dance, ambient, rock and other types of music. His music has been used in all three Bourne films, Cloverfield, Miami Vice, xXx: State of the Union, The Devil Wears Prada, CSI: NY, The Sorpranos, and lots of other stuff.

Digital Still Cameras for Video

Digital still cameras have had a video feature for a number of years. Nikon's D90 Digital SLR offers 720p HD resolution. Check out this remarkable example shot on a subway. The camera allows for great shallow depth of field and the use of 35mm lenses. It costs $1300. You can read this review with some test footage. It will be interesting to see how this this converegnce of camera features develops. Perhaps DSLRs in the future will be used for for both video and still work.

MacBreak Studio - Free Tutorials

Mac users will really benefit from the podcast MacBreak Studio. They feature tips and techniques for users of Final Cut Studio. They have had some really excellent episodes. They are short, around eight minutes, which makes them great for showing to a class. They put out a new episode every Friday.
